According to a study at UT Southwestern, GERD has been misdiagnosed and treated with PPI’s drugs, when all along the cause has been inflammation as most holistic and naturopathic doctors have maintained for years.

From this article today on FoxNews.com, Big Pharma will not be calling off the profit making drugs anytime soon, not until they can find another drug to sell you apparently.

“Although this radical change in the concept of how acid reflux damages the esophagus of GERD patients will not change our approach to its treatment with acid-suppressing medications in the near future” said Dr. Stuart Spechler, senior study author and a professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern and chief of the department of gastroenterology at the Dallas VA Medical Center, according to a news release.

We previously have reported on the dangers of PPI’s and warning people that take popular acid reflux drugs for heartburn. The drugs, proton-pump inhibitors, also known as PPIs, are now being shown to elevate the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. A study using more than 250,000 people was performed and has made a strong connection.

Drug names include Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid and are sold both as over the counter and prescription. These medicines are purchased as common practice for heartburn, even though heartburn can be solved in a variety of natural, common-sense ways. This entire pharmaceutical industry promoting “solving or relieving heartburn” has been little more than a sham. I can’t even count the amount of times this stuff was recommended to me by Doctors. There is simply no excuse for having ever prescribed this, today’s study doesn’t change the fact that it has always been incredibly irresponsible. According to NPR.

When PPIs were first approved in the 1980s, the drugs appeared to be very safe. Since then, concerns have been rising about their safety. Evidence has emerged that the drugs may increase the risk for a variety of problems, including bone fractures, infections and possibly even heart problems.

Amazing what this science of guessing has become, finding a profit mechanism, rather than a cure.
